    Algebraic Poetry

    Although content has evolved in poetry at a steady pace throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the form in which this content is presented has seen little change. In response to this apparent stagnation of form in poetry, this presentation aims to combat the enforced linearity of writing, embracing Cubist ideals, to make way for a new form of poetry- algebraic poetry. This new form may then provide new inspiration within the literary community, and a new form with which writers may move forward, as opposed to adhering to the same form for centuries. This project then uses modern algebra to create a poem which operates within an algebraic structure forcing the reader to consider the perspectives it yields, with each possibility of the poem existing as an element of an infinite semigroup. The poem has infinitely many perceived orders, and thus can only be considered as a whole as opposed to one of its individual elements, in contrast to most other poetry produced in history. This structure is then compared to the philosophical works of David Hume and Immanuel Kant, and the algebraic implications of their understanding of the human intellect. It is concluded that the poem exists to reflect a simulated human mind through this algebraic structuring, assessing various philosophical agreements and contradictions throughout its history

    Efficient Local Comparison Of Images Using Krawtchouk Descriptors

    It is known that image comparison can prove cumbersome in both computational complexity and runtime, due to factors such as the rotation, scaling, and translation of the object in question. Due to the locality of Krawtchouk polynomials, relatively few descriptors are necessary to describe a given image, and this can be achieved with minimal memory usage. Using this method, not only can images be described efficiently as a whole, but specific regions of images can be described as well without cropping. Due to this property, queries can be found within a single large image, or collection of large images, which serve as a database for search. Krawtchouk descriptors can also describe collections of patches of 3D objects, which is explored in this paper, as well as a theoretical methodology of describing nD hyperobjects. Test results for an implementation of 3D Krawtchouk descriptors in GNU Octave, as well as statistics regarding effectiveness and runtime, are included, and the code used for testing will be published open source in the near future

    Content: A combination of processing techniques and speciality chemicals has been developed to target environmental issues and legislation in the European leather industry, especially for automotive upholstery leather. This process combines new techniques in the beamhouse process through to the tanning process. Initial work on several different individual concepts showed some excellent improvements, but when these concepts have been brought together to form a single strategic process the advantages and improvements have exceeded expectations. The process demonstrates a reduction in the use of salt, formic acid and sulphuric acid. After more than two years of trials from small scale to full production in an automotive leather production environment, we are able to present independently test results showing the benefits of following this system. Briefly these include Improvement in tear and tensile strength results. Improved clarification with less suspended solids in the supernatant. Reduced COD in the supernatant and higher biodegradability COD/BOD. Less TDS in the supernatant. Chloride content reduction in the supernatant Sludge generation reduction. Less organic residues derived from the hide. Take-Away: A simple technique and small modifications to existing processing methods will reduce dramatically the environmental effects of wet white / chrome free tanning. This process can be used in any country in the world and answers many questions regarding reducing salt, BOD, COD, TDS etc

    Stem cells have captured the imagination of the general public by their potential as new therapeutic tools in the fight against degenerative diseases. This potential is based on their capability for self-renewal and at the same time for producing progenitor cells that will eventually provide the building blocks for tissue and organ regeneration. These processes are carefully orchestrated in the organism by means of a series of molecular cues. An emerging molecule which is responsible for some of these physiological responses is adrenomedullin, a 52-amino acid regulatory peptide which increases proliferation and regulates cell fate of stem cells of different origins. Adrenomedullin binds to specific membrane receptors in stem cells and induces several intracellular pathways such as those involving cAMP, Akt, or MAPK. Regulation of adrenomedullin levels may help in directing the growth and differentiation of stem cells for applications (e.g., cell therapy) both in vitro and in vivo. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.Peer Reviewe

    Cool-SPS: an opportunity for low temperature sintering of thermodynamically fragile materials

    Sintering has been achieved by Spark Plasma Sintering at low temperatures (90% of theoretical density) fragile materials, and also highlights the extra stability afforded by this approch for certain materials which have been sintered above their normal decomposition temperature. Using multiple examples, this work illustrates the potential of “Cool-SPS” for fast and efficient sintering of fragile materials which are impossible to sinter by conventional sintering techniques
